Dr. McNelis is a licensed clinical psychologist and the owner/founder of Changes Psychological Services, PLLC. She graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, completing a BA/MA program in General Psychology. She then went on to complete a second Master’s degree and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from American University, also in Washington, DC.
Dr. McNelis has over 17 years of experience in providing psychological services. She began her training in a university counseling center, followed by community mental health work. She has practiced within several branches of the criminal justice system, at a state hospital for those with serious mental illnesses and in a large business corporation. Additionally, she currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Psychology Department at The Catholic University of America, training doctoral students in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. She has continually worked with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Dr. McNelis specializes in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for adults with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and mood disorders. CBT is a solution-focused, goal-oriented and collaborative treatment, which focuses primarily on the here-and-now. It is evidenced-based, meaning that research supports its effectiveness. During therapy, Dr. McNelis works with her clients to specifically target ways of managing and coping with problematic symptoms. She encourages her clients to challenge and alter negative thought processes in order to influence behaviors in a positive direction. She promotes active engagement, both within and outside of the therapeutic setting, which she believes serves to empower clients toward continual progress.
Dr. McNelis is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Pennsylvania. She is an in-network provider with BCBS PPO and FEP plans.
